Bulk SMS

What is bulk SMS messaging?

Bulk SMS messaging is a legacy description for application-to-person SMS messaging services. It refers specifically to the sending of large number of SMS messages to the mobile phones of a predetermined group of recipients.
Today the application-to-person SMS messaging services have evolved to include bulk SMS messaging alongside the sending of single messages (such as one time passwords and delivery notifications), interactive messaging (such as group messaging services), and incoming number services (such as mobile marketing campaigns, voting or information lines).
A defining characteristic of bulk SMS messaging is that businesses and organisations can make use of one or more solutions to send and receive SMS messages, namely; a mobile phone application, a software programme, a web interface, or integrate an SMS API with their website or system. These bulk SMS messaging solutions interface with a service providers’ SMS gateway to ensure the delivery of messages to mobile phone numbers anywhere in the world.
.

An SMS gateway acts as a relay between the mobile network operators and a wireless applications service provider. These SMS gateways allow for SMS traffic to distributed via a direct connection to the SMSC (Short Message Service Centre) of a mobile network operation and then onto a recipient’s mobile phone number.
The uses of bulk SMS messaging is continually evolving as new business or public benefit needs are identified. From large scale businesses to small enterprises, community groups to educational institutions, bulk SMS messaging provides a cost effective solution for managing communications with small or large contact groups.
Before commencing with the sending bulk SMS messages it is important to note that you must comply with the regulations specific to your country and the country to which you are sending SMS messages.

What is an SMS API?

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a means by which the functions of a computer program (such as the BulkSMS service) can be made available to another computer program (such as the notification component of an online booking website). This is made possible by using a standard, which is made known to the programmers of both programs.
The term “API” is used both to refer to the documentation that explains to programmers exactly how requests and responses will be formed (the “API specification”) as well as the actual service offered using this API.
BulkSMS offers a range of APIs to allow programmers to design software to interact and integrate with our service. In some cases, existing software with the necessary capability can simply be configured to use one of our APIs, without any custom coding needed.
Once the SMS API has been integrated into your software, you no longer have to manually log in to an application or platform to send SMS messages. Instead, these protocols allow for the process of sending SMS messages to become automated.

Here are some examples of what an SMS API integration can do:

At BulkSMS we offer a sophisticated SMS gateway platform for sending text messages to over 800 mobile networks. Our most popular API is the HTTP to SMS API which is a RESTful API that uses simple query parameters via URLs. If you can put together a Web page with a form, backed by a scripting language (e.g. PHP), you already have what you need to send autmoted SMS messages.
